Why did AEG commission such a grand building? The Elbhof stands here a testament to Hamburg’s rich merchant history. Built between 1904 and 1905, the Elbhof was designed by architect Walter Martens. AEG wanted a building that would allow goods to arrive by both water and land. The Herrengrabenfleet and Steinhöft border the site making this possible.

The Elbhof was created in the style of an old Hamburg merchant’s house. It features a front building, a courtyard wing and a storage house. The opulent stairwell reflects its representative function. Bronze sculptures by Arthur Bock adorn the facade above the entrance. They are crowned with Hamburg’s coat of arms. These sculptures include male figures named “Stormy Surges” and female figures named “Whispering Waves”. The Elbhof book design reflects these quotes on its cover.

During the war, the Elbhof sustained damage. It was initially repaired with a simple flat roof. But in 1990 and 1991, during a renovation, the distinctive copper roof was reconstructed. It was rebuilt close to its original form.

Today, the Elbhof is largely occupied by the Hamburg branch of the advertising agency Serviceplan. The Elbhof is more than just a building. It is a protected monument. It is a reminder of Hamburg’s architectural evolution and commercial past. The Elbhof began a new era in Hamburg. It remains an important part of the Hamburg skyline. Its symmetrical shape and clear design leave a lasting impression. The Elbhof is a timeless design.
