Have you ever heard a lighthouse whisper secrets? Wittenbergen Unterfeuer has been murmuring to the Elbe since 1900. This striking red and white steel lattice tower isn’t just a pretty face. It’s a vital guide, the front light of a range guiding ships safely down the Elbe River. Wittenbergen Unterfeuer and its partner, Tinsdal lighthouse, create the Wittenbergen–Tinsdal range line. Imagine the responsibility, guiding massive vessels through the bustling waterway! Wittenbergen Unterfeuer stands proudly on a hexagonal masonry base. It was constructed between 1899 and 1900. This makes it one of the oldest steel lighthouses of its kind. The construction uses a “Treppenrohr mit Gratsparren” design. Think of it as a staircase tube with rafters, a clever way to build a sturdy and elegant structure. In 1905, the river had other plans. The Elbe’s currents shifted. Wittenbergen Unterfeuer needed to move. The four-ton, 30-meter tower was relocated nine meters south. They literally picked up a lighthouse and moved it! In 1927, Wittenbergen Unterfeuer got a makeover. The old petroleum lamp was replaced with a snazzy liquid gas lantern and new optics. It even got its signature red and white stripes then. Modernization continued in 1966. Wittenbergen Unterfeuer was electrified. By 1979 it became remotely controlled. Today, it boasts a powerful double signal spotlight. It can be seen for an impressive 14.3 nautical miles. Wittenbergen Unterfeuer isn’t just a functional structure. It’s a piece of Hamburg’s maritime history. It has witnessed the changes in shipping, the evolution of technology. It silently observes the constant flow of the Elbe. Since 2004, Wittenbergen Unterfeuer has been a protected monument, a testament to its enduring importance. As you stand here, appreciate this sentinel of the Elbe. It is more than just a lighthouse. It’s a storyteller.
