Marvelous Deichtorhallen aren’t they? Look at these impressive halls. They stand as a testament to Hamburg’s rich history and artistic spirit.

These magnificent structures weren’t always art galleries. Believe it or not they started life as market halls. Built between 1911 and 1914 on the site of the former Berliner Bahnhof railway station these halls represent a rare survival from the transitional period between Art Nouveau and 20th-century design. Imagine the bustling activity the sounds of commerce the smells of fresh produce filling these very spaces. They were Hamburg’s answer to Berlin’s Hamburger Bahnhof a significant railway terminus.

The northern hall a vast longitudinal building boasts three naves and a footprint of 3800 square meters. The southern hall a more intimate space of 1800 square meters features a distinctive lantern roof. These open steel-and-glass structures are stunning examples of industrial architecture.

In 1989 the Deichtorhallen were transformed. The Korber Foundation gifted the restored halls to the City of Hamburg. They became the Deichtorhallen-Ausstellungs GmbH. Their international art exhibition program launched on November 9 1989 with the show “Einleuchten” curated by the influential Harald Szeemann. This event marked the beginning of Deichtorhallen’s reputation as a major European center for contemporary art and photography.

Since 2003 the southern hall has been dedicated to photography becoming the House of Photography. The Deichtorhallen’s reputation continues to grow. It boasts an impressive exhibition history. Wolfgang Tillmans Martin Parr Martin Munkacsi Jonathan Meese Georg Baselitz and countless others have shown their work here. The Deichtorhallen are truly a dynamic and vibrant space.

Today Deichtorhallen aren’t just exhibition halls they are iconic landmarks. They are part of Hamburg’s Kunstmeile art mile. Their architectural uniqueness continues to inspire artists and architects. They are a place where the past meets the present creating a spectacular showcase of art and culture. A visit to the Deichtorhallen is a journey through time and art. It’s a journey that celebrates both the industrial past and the vibrant artistic present of this incredible city.
