Their story began long before the famous White Rose in Munich. These Hamburg students and their older allies met in secret. They shared forbidden books and listened to foreign radio broadcasts. One group centered around former students from the Lichtwarkschule. Another gathered around the Leipelt family in Wilhelmsburg. Reinhold Meyer’s bookshop at Jungfernstieg 50 served as a crucial link. Their activities weren’t limited to hushed meetings. They copied and distributed leaflets from the Munich White Rose. They spread the message of passive resistance. The leaflets denounced Nazi crimes. They also advocated peaceful defiance of the war. Central figures included Margaretha Rothe and Albert Suhr. Heinz Kucharski Reinhold Meyer and Karl Ludwig Schneider were also key. Hannelore Willbrandt a book seller played a vital role. Traute Lafrenz and Hans Leipelt brought news and leaflets from the Munich resistance. The network extended far beyond these key players. It involved roughly 50 individuals bound by personal and familial ties.
Tragically their defiance didn’t go unnoticed. By 1944 the Gestapo exposed them. Over thirty members faced arrest. Eight of them were murdered or perished in prison. Hans Leipelt was among those executed. He met his end in Munich’s Stadelheim prison in January 1945. Others died in the Neuengamme concentration camp.
