The salty air whispers tales of voyages past. Right here before us lies the MS Bleichen a magnificent museum ship. This isn’t just any vessel. It’s a living testament to Hamburg’s maritime history. Built in 1958 the Bleichen was commissioned by the H M Gehrckens shipping company. She was a sturdy freighter designed to withstand the harsh conditions of the North and Baltic Seas.

Imagine the Bleichen cutting through winter ice. She carried cargo between Hamburg and ports in Sweden and Finland. Her voyages were long sometimes lasting fourteen days. The ship’s robust construction allowed her to brave the icy waters. That’s why she was given the highest Finnish ice class rating.

The Bleichen’s journey wasn’t confined to the Baltic. When Scandinavian ports were inaccessible she ventured to West Africa. This remarkable vessel sailed under different names Canal Grande Arcipel and Old Lady. Yet she always remained strong.

Then came a rescue. The Stiftung Hamburg Maritim saved her from the scrapyard. They brought her back to Hamburg. After extensive restoration the Bleichen was christened on April 27 2007. The Old Lady had returned.

Now she resides in the Hansahafen. You can explore her decks. See her original steering wheel. Walk through the lounge and cabins. The engine room reveals the heart of this maritime giant. It’s a journey through time. A voyage into the past glory of Hamburg’s shipping industry. Each rivet each wooden panel whispers tales of the brave sailors who sailed her.

The Bleichen stands as more than just a museum ship. It’s a symbol of Hamburg’s resilience. Its spirit lives on. Today the Bleichen is also an event venue. She hosts readings concerts and parties. She welcomes visitors to explore her rich history. Step aboard and feel the echoes of a bygone era. The MS Bleichen awaits you.
