What if I told you a school could travel through time? Here at Hugim Highschool, perched on Mount Carmel, it feels like we’ve stepped into a living history book. Hugim, meaning “circles” in Hebrew, isn’t just a name. It represents the ever-expanding circles of knowledge and community that have defined this institution since its humble beginnings. Established in 1934 in Haifa’s bustling port city, Hugim Highschool began as a private initiative by a group of teachers. Led by the visionary Dr. Yair Katz, their mission was simple. They wanted to teach Hebrew to new immigrants, especially those arriving from German-speaking countries. Hugim wasn’t just about language acquisition. It also aimed to instill Israeli cultural and social values. The school thrived. It expanded its offerings and eventually gained state recognition as a municipal high school in the 1980s. Imagine small study groups transforming into full classrooms, buzzing with the energy of eager learners. Dr. Katz’s philosophy of student-centered learning shaped the educational approach from the very beginning. This very philosophy continues to guide Hugim today. Fast forward to April 2019, and Hugim moved to a brand new, accessible building. This modern campus, also located on Mount Carmel, offers cutting-edge facilities and stunning views of Haifa Bay. Today, Hugim Highschool is a vibrant hub of learning, with over 1,160 students and 126 teachers. The school’s commitment to interdisciplinary learning allows students to explore a wide range of subjects. These subjects include diplomacy, robotics, mechatronics, computer science, and communication. Hugim also boasts well-equipped physics and biology labs. And let’s not forget the long-standing tradition of German language instruction, available as an elective for students seeking a well-rounded education. From its early days as a haven for new immigrants to its current status as a modern educational institution, Hugim Highschool has continuously adapted and evolved. Yet it has always remained true to its core values of community, knowledge, and the pursuit of excellence. The circles of Hugim continue to expand, reaching out to the world through student exchanges. They are also reaching out through innovative programs and partnerships. As you stand here, consider the generations of students who have walked these halls. They have learned, grown, and contributed to the rich tapestry of Haifa’s history. Their legacy lives on within these “circles” of Hugim, a testament to the power of education and community.
