What would you say is the most misleading term in geography? A valley, perhaps? The Zvulun Valley, spread out before us, is a prime example! It’s not actually a valley in the traditional sense. It’s a fertile coastal plain, stretching 14 kilometers long and 9 kilometers wide. This land, kissed by the Mediterranean sun, is part of a larger lowland system created by geological faults, connecting the Jordan River all the way to the Haifa Bay. This “valley” got its name due to a simple mistake. Early Zionist pioneers, perhaps caught up in the romanticism of the biblical Tribe of Zebulun, assigned the name. The Book of Joshua, however, places the Tribe of Zebulun in the Jezreel Valley, further inland. This coastal haven actually belonged to the Tribe of Asher. But the name stuck, and today, we know this fertile expanse as the Zvulun Valley. Look around, and you’ll see the modern face of this historical land. The bustling Krayot cluster of cities claims the west, while the east is a tapestry of kibbutzim like Yagur and settlements like Kfar Hasidim, all overseen by the Zevulun Regional Council. Even with its misnomer, the Zvulun Valley remains a testament to the enduring connection between history, nature, and human endeavor.
