Beneath the vast sky, overlooking Haifa, stands Or HaCarmel. Or HaCarmel, also known as Light of the Carmel, is more than just a building. It’s a beacon of faith, a testament to the enduring spirit of the Messianic community in Israel. Or HaCarmel is the heart of Kehilat HaCarmel, the Carmel Congregation. This congregation traces its roots back to 1991. It emerged amidst the return of Russian-speaking Jews and the aftermath of the Gulf War. The initial meetings took place in downtown Haifa at Beit Nitzachon, a rehabilitation center. Later, the congregation moved to rented space on Mount Carmel. The current Or HaCarmel worship center was completed in 1998. Over 500 volunteers from 50 nations helped build it. The design is inspired by the story of Elijah in 1 Kings 18. Inside, twelve stones symbolize the twelve tribes of Israel. A skylight above the altar represents an open heaven. The congregation’s vision is to rebuild the Lord’s altar, metaphorically speaking, and rekindle the fire of His presence in Israel. They aim to unite Jews, Arabs, and Gentiles in worship and service. Or HaCarmel also houses a women’s shelter, the Mount Carmel School of Ministry, and a cafe for visitors. The congregation extends its mission beyond its walls through humanitarian efforts like the House of Victory, the Or HaCarmel women’s shelter, the Raven’s Basket feeding program, and Elijah’s Cloak clothing center. They strive to offer help to those in need, regardless of background. Located on the highest point of Mount Carmel, Or HaCarmel isn’t just a place of worship, but a hub of prayer for all nations. It is a place where the past intertwines with the present, and where the echoes of ancient prophecies mingle with the hopes of a brighter future.
