Established in 1944 the Assemblies of God in Accra marked a pivotal moment. The Gospel’s journey south began. Missionaries had already blazed a trail in the north. They established churches in Yendi Tamale and Walewale long before Accra’s congregation took root. These early missionaries faced incredible hardship. They endured hostile environments and fought hunger disease and poverty. They even established clinics and Bible schools in the north. They believed that practical aid complemented the spiritual message.

Rev Lloyd and Margaret Shirer were among the first. They arrived on horseback from Burkina Faso. Their dedication was remarkable. They shared the gospel alongside Miss Beulah Buchhwalter and Guy Hickok. Sadly some like Bushwalker and Guy Hickok died in 1942. Their sacrifice though paved the way for the Assemblies of God’s growth.

The arrival of the ‘Ambassador’ airplane in 1948 was a game changer. The Wheeler Andersons Rody Johnson and Ozella Reid joined the missionary team. Their presence solidified the church’s presence. The Andersons even found printing equipment. This eventually led to the Assemblies of God Literature Centre (AGLC) in Accra. This center served the whole sub-region publishing even a Dagomba New Testament. The Assemblies of God in Accra became a hub.

The church didn’t just preach the gospel. It also acted as a catalyst for change. It improved lives practically through literacy classes. It provided vocational training. The Assemblies of God in Accra wasn’t just a spiritual center. It was a community hub providing education healthcare and literature.
