What echoes remain in Wenshi? It is a town within Guilin, a place where history whispers from every corner. Guilin’s history stretches back an incredible 10,000 years. Imagine prehistoric inhabitants fishing and hunting here. Relics found in Zengpiyan Cave offer a glimpse into this ancient Matriarchal Clan Society. You can see these relics in the Guilin Zengpiyan Site Museum.
Fast forward to 214 BC. The Qin Dynasty established Guilin Shire. This marks the first appearance of the name Guilin. The Lingqu Canal was dug. Guilin became a gateway between the Central Plains and Lingnan Region. This canal is considered one of China’s three engineering marvels. It links the Yangtze and Pearl River Systems.
In 111 BC, during the Han Dynasty, Shi’an County began in this region. Later, Shi’an State, now Guilin, became strategically important. During the Three Kingdoms Period, the Shu and Wu States governed Shi’an. It gradually grew into a political hub.
The city was renamed Guizhou during the Southern and Northern Dynasties. In the Tang Dynasty, Guilin gained importance as a government center. General Li Jing constructed city walls and great halls in 621. You can still see the Ancient South Gate. It is a remnant of the old city walls by Banyan Lake. A 1,000-year-old Banyan tree stands before the gate.
During the Tang Dynasty, Jian Zhen, a Chinese monk, spread Buddhism here. He stayed in Guilin for a year. He taught at Kaiyuan Temple, Qixia Temple, and Jianshan Temple. These temples still stand today, after many repairs.
In the Song Dynasty, Guilin was the capital of Guangnan xilu. This area included today’s Guangxi and Hainan Provinces. The dynasty left many ancient rock inscriptions and steles. It is said that Guilin is the best place to view steles from the Song Dynasty. You can see these steles at the Museum of Guihai Stele Forest.
The museum has over 210 cliff-carving steles from the Tang to Minguo Dynasties. Most carvings are from the Song Dynasty. They show the refined Chinese art and calligraphy culture.
During the Ming Dynasty, a nephew of the Emperor was sent to administer Guilin. He became the Prince of Jingjiang. He built Jingjiang Palace at the foot of Solitary Beauty Peak. It predates the Imperial Palace in Beijing. Fourteen kings from twelve generations lived here. It is the best-preserved example of a vassal state mansion from the Ming Dynasty.
Eleven princes of the Jingjiang family were buried at the Mausoleum of Prince Jingjiang, near Yao Mountain. The Jiangjiang King Tombs Complex covers over 100 square kilometers. These tombs are important cultural relics.
In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Guilin became the capital of Guangxi. More people settled along the Li River. You can still see many ancient towns with traditional Chinese architecture. They include Daxu Ancient Town and Xingping Fishing Village.
These towns feature unique wooden architecture. Brick walls protect against rain. Black tiles record the village’s history. Ornamented beams reflect local culture. These buildings have stood for hundreds of years. They remain homes for the locals.
Guilin holds countless historical sites and relics. Ancient coins, inscriptions, and instruments are well-preserved. These relics help us explore the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
During World War II, the Flying Tigers helped China fight against Japan. The Yangtang Airfield played a crucial role. General Chennault watched his Flying Tigers from a rock near his command cave. You can still see this scene today. The Flying Tigers Park commemorates this Sino-US cooperation.
In 1973, US President Richard Nixon visited Guilin. He called it “a bright pearl in China.” In 1979, Secretary of State Herry Kissinger visited Guilin. He said Guilin’s landscapes are portraits of realism. Wenshi, as part of Guilin, shares in this rich tapestry of history.
Today, Guilin is a neatly laid-out city. Every autumn, the air smells of cassia blossoms. It is a place where ancient history meets modern life. The story of Wenshi is woven into this larger narrative. It is a story of resilience, culture, and natural beauty.
