Did you know Shilong boasts a history stretching back to the Song Dynasty? Right here before you stands a town steeped in centuries of rich heritage. Shilong was not always the bustling place it is today. Early inhabitants settled here long ago drawn by the waters of the Dongjiang River. This crucial waterway transformed Shilong into a vital hub. It facilitated the transport of food and timber throughout southern China during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. The arrival of the Kowloon-Canton Railway in 1910 dramatically changed things. This railway line passed directly through Shilong. It cemented the town’s status as a major commercial center. Shilong’s economic growth soared. It even earned the title of one of Guangdong’s ‘Four Big Towns’. Shilong’s fame extended beyond its commerce. It’s renowned as the ‘Hometown of Weightlifting’. This claim stems from the incredible achievements of weightlifting world record holder Chen Jin-Kai. The legacy of Shilong extends to its ecology. The town is recognized as a renowned historical and cultural town. It’s home to remarkable ancient trees some over 300 years old. The government meticulously preserves these ancient trees creating electronic archives for each. Shilong also shelters twenty-eight sites of significant historical and cultural importance. Five of these sites are officially designated key cultural heritage units. The town’s cultural life is vibrant. A development fund supports Cantonese Opera performances. Free performances are held every Saturday in Yat-sen Park. Museums and exhibition centers serve as educational and cultural hubs. In 2005 Shilong earned another distinction becoming the Dragon Boat Champion Center in China. The town hosts numerous cultural and artistic events each year reflecting the depth of Shilong’s enduring legacy. Shilong is more than just a town. It is a living testament to history culture and community. A true gem nestled in Guilin’s vibrant landscape.
