Rulin Town serves as the seat of Chengbu Miao Autonomous County in Hunan province China. Its history stretches far back. In the Sui Dynasty around the 610s AD a separatist leader established Jian Prefecture. Within this prefecture lay Wuyou County. Its seat resided where Rulin stands today. Wuyou County later transformed into Wugang County. The county seat eventually shifted. The area of the former seat became known as Chengbu Stockaded Village.
Then in 1504 Chengbu County emerged. It was formed from parts of Wugang and Suining Counties. Chengbu’s name directly references the Stockaded Village. Rulin Town itself was officially established much later in 1950. It underwent further reorganization. It became a commune and then a town in 1961.
