Climb aboard our time machine as we visit Longtan Ancient Village. Here, nestled just 9km from the county seat, lies a village frozen in time. It’s a mere kilometer from the famed Moon Hill. Longtan Ancient Village is a testament to China’s rich history.
The name Longtan means “Dragon Pool”. This name comes from a deep pool located near a hill. Locals thought the hill resembled a dragon’s head.
Longtan Ancient Village’s story began in 1582. The Yangshuo County Annals tell us this. For over 400 years, this village has stood. More than fifty ancient dwellings from the Ming and Qing dynasties still stand. These houses cover about 6,000 square meters.
As you wander, notice the fengshui. The ancient houses face west. Large stones serve as foundations. Black bricks and upturned eaves catch your eye. Painted rafters and lattice windows depict flowers and birds. These elements whisper stories of the past. They tell tales of ordinary lives lived within these walls.
Longtan Ancient Village was known as a cradle of talent. Villagers say over thirty people from Longtan earned the chin-shih honor. This was the highest imperial examination in feudal times. Locals proudly display horizontal inscribed boards. They hang them over the doors of these honored scholars’ homes. This shows their respect and pride.
The scenery is stunning here. Longtan Ancient Village sits at the base of a hill and overlooks the river. Karst caves dot the landscape. These natural wonders attract visitors from all over.
