This isn’t just a stone structure. It’s a place where history echoes and the spirit of heroism lives on. The Yangshuo Martyrs Monument serves as a reminder of the area’s past. It reflects the struggles and triumphs that have shaped Yangshuo.

Yangshuo itself is a place steeped in history. Its origins trace back to 214 B.C. It was then that the Qin Dynasty established Guilin Shire. Yangshuo fell under Guilin’s jurisdiction.

Over the centuries Yangshuo has seen many changes. During the Han Dynasty it was governed by Jingzhouling Shire. The creation of Shangan County and Xiping County in 265 A.D. marked a significant development. This is considered the genesis of Yangshuo.

The county seat moved to its present location in Yangshuo Town in 590 during the Sui Dynasty. Later in 621 during the Tang Dynasty part of Yangshuo County became Guiyi County. But in 627 Guiyi County was reintegrated back into Yangshuo County.

During the Republican Period Yangshuo County was administered by Guilin. In 1949 Yangshuo County was liberated. It established its own people’s government. However by 1981 it returned to Guilin City’s administration as a county.

Consider the weight of history embedded in this land. Reflect on the courage of those remembered here at the Yangshuo Martyrs Monument. The monument stands as a solemn reminder. It represents the cost of freedom and the enduring spirit of the people of Yangshuo.

The monument is more than just a landmark. It’s a focal point for reflection. It allows us to remember the sacrifices made for the region.

As you stand before the Yangshuo Martyrs Monument listen to the whispers of the wind. Perhaps you can hear the echoes of the past. Imagine the lives of those who shaped this land. Think about their dreams and their unwavering commitment.

Take a moment to appreciate the beauty of the surrounding landscape. Note the karst peaks that define Yangshuo. These peaks were formed over 200 million years ago. The area was once below sea level.
