Imagine standing before a giant. This giant is not made of flesh and bone. It is made of stone and sky. This is Moon Hill. It is a natural arch. It graces the landscape a few kilometers outside Yangshuo. Moon Hill is more than just a hill. It is a testament to time. It is a canvas painted by nature’s hand.

Moon Hill gets its name from the wide semicircular hole. It pierces through the hill. This opening is all that remains of an ancient limestone cave. The cave was formed in the phreatic zone. Like many formations here, it is karst. This means it’s made of soluble rocks.

Getting to the arch takes about 20 minutes. You have to climb roughly 800 steps. Reaching the summit takes longer. There is an entrance fee. Vendors sell souvenirs and refreshments along the way.

But the climb is worth it. Moon Hill offers panoramic views. You can see the knobby karst hills. They define this region.

Look closely at the moon-shaped hole. Local legends say you might see immortals. People claim to spot Chang’e. She is the moon goddess. They also see the Jade Rabbit and Wu Gang. He is the woodcutter. These figures are said to inhabit the Guanghan Palace on the moon.

For those seeking a different thrill, Moon Hill has rock climbing routes. Todd Skinner climbed the first route in the 1990s. There are 14 rock-climbing routes on the northwest side. Moon Hill challenges both amateur and professional climbers.

In 1972, former U.S. President Richard Nixon and his wife climbed Moon Hill. The hill is the last stop. It is on the Ten-Mile Gallery. This is a picturesque tourism section in Yangshuo County.

The arch itself is immense. It is about 50 meters in diameter. Some say the stalactites inside resemble Chang’e, the Jade Rabbit, and Wu Gang.

In the evening, locals light grapefruit lamps. They put them into the Li River at midnight. They do this to make wishes during the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Moon Hill isn’t just a geological wonder. It is a cultural icon. It is a natural masterpiece. It invites us to marvel at the beauty of our world. It connects us to the legends of the past. It inspires us to challenge our limits. Whether you are a hiker, a climber, or a dreamer, Moon Hill has something to offer.
