Drawn by the allure of modern progress, Zhujiang Subdistrict stands as a testament to Guangzhou’s rapid transformation. It is a subdistrict of the Yuexiu District. Zhujiang represents both Guangzhou’s ambitions and the echoes of its past.

Once an area of open marshland bordering the Pearl River, Zhujiang New Town now boasts skyscrapers and bustling commercial centers. The vision for this area emerged in the late 1980s. Development stagnated for over a decade. The local government tried to encourage progress by relocating some offices. These included the customs office and taxation bureau.

A turning point arrived with Guangzhou’s preparations to host the 2010 Asian Games. This event spurred significant investment from both the government and private developers. Today, Zhujiang New Town has the highest concentration of luxury hotels and office buildings in the city.

Within Zhujiang New Town lies Xian Cun, a village with 800 years of history. Xian Cun is now an urban village. It stands as a reminder of what Zhujiang once was. Its location in Zhujiang New Town’s CBD makes it valuable. However, this prime real estate has also made it a target for demolition. Conflicts arose as authorities sought land development. They failed to reach an agreement with local villagers regarding compensation.

Over the past decade, Xian Cun has faced violent demolition, with many buildings reduced to rubble. Today, Xian Cun exists as a ghostly shell of a community. It is shadowed by Guangzhou’s modern skyscrapers. It serves as a powerful reminder of the human cost of progress.

Zhujiang New Town is divided by Xiancun Road. The eastern area features high-rise residential buildings and Zhujiang Park. This layout mirrors New York City’s Central Park. The western portion is the city’s new CBD. It has open plazas, underground shopping malls and a people mover system. It also hosts cultural venues like the Guangzhou Opera House and the Guangdong Museum. The Canton Tower stands across the river.

Zhujiang New Town has become a hub for international presence. The Consulate General of the United States in Guangzhou is located here. Many other consulates are also located in the area’s office buildings. R&F Properties has its head office in Zhujiang New Town. Zhujiang New Town is served by the Zhujiang New Town station on Lines 3 and 5 of the Guangzhou Metro.

Zhujiang Subdistrict’s story is one of ambition, transformation, and the struggle to preserve the past. It is a place where skyscrapers touch the clouds. It is also a place where the echoes of a forgotten village can still be heard. Zhujiang Subdistrict is more than just a business district. It’s a symbol of Guangzhou’s complex identity.
