Wondering about a place where cannons once roared and history was forged? Then welcome to Humen. Humen Town stands on the eastern side of the Humen strait. It sits on the Pearl River Delta in Guangdong province. Humen’s story is deeply intertwined with China’s tumultuous past.

Let’s journey back to the First Opium War. It raged from 1839 to 1842. Humen became a crucial site in this conflict. Lin Zexu, a Chinese official, oversaw the destruction of vast quantities of seized opium right here in Humen in 1839. Imagine the scene. Great pyres of opium burning sending plumes of smoke into the sky. This act was a defiant stand against the opium trade.

Humen witnessed intense battles. The waters of the Bocca Tigris saw fierce fighting during the First Opium War. These battles shaped the course of history.

Today Humen is more than just a historical site. It is a major manufacturing hub. Many consumer goods factories thrive here. These factories attracted workers from all over China. They sought opportunities in the booming economy. Humen’s location is geographically advantageous. It lies close to Hong Kong and Shenzhen. Its port, Humen Port is a first-class port open to foreign vessels. Ships can navigate the Pearl River to reach various regions. They can access eastern northern and western Guangdong and even parts of Guangxi province.

For tourists Humen offers a blend of history and culture. The Sea Battle Museum showcases dioramas and displays. They detail the First and Second Opium Wars. You can reach the museum by taking bus number 8A or 8B. The Opium War Museum also known as the Lin Zexu Memorial Museum, provides deeper insights.

Several Qing dynasty forts dot the landscape around Humen. Weiyuan Fort sits near the Sea Battle Museum. It lies almost directly under the Humen Pearl River Bridge. Shajiao Fort, or “sand corner” fort, is where the Convention of Chuenpi was signed in 1841. Eyi Fort and Jingyuan Fort are also worth exploring.

Getting to Humen is convenient. You can take a direct bus from Guangzhou. Buses also run south to Shenzhen’s Window of the World theme park. From there you can reach the Hong Kong border by bus or metro.

For air travel a bus service connects Humen Town to Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport. Alternatively a ferry service runs from Humen Ferry Terminal to Hong Kong International Airport’s SkyPier.

So as you stand in Humen consider its layered past. From the flames of the Opium War to its modern-day economic significance. This town tells a compelling story of resilience trade and transformation. A story etched into the very ground beneath our feet.
