“Most romantic landmark.” That is how some people describe 文德楼.

Welcome to 文德楼 a historic building in Guangzhou. It stands as a testament to a romantic revolutionary history. This Western-style building is located in Yuexiu District. It is hailed as one of Guangzhou’s most romantic landmarks.

文德楼 comprises five three-story structures. It was constructed in the early 20th century. Over 90 years ago Zhou Enlai and his comrades lived here. Zhou Enlai and Deng Yingchao even married in this building.

In 1999 the Guangzhou Municipal People’s Government declared 文德楼 a Guangzhou Municipal Cultural Relic Protection Unit.

文德楼 stands on Wende East Road. It is a quiet contrast to the bustling Beijing Road nearby. That road is known as Guangzhou’s “First Cultural Street.” Wende East Road offers a rich scholarly atmosphere. This 700-meter street features many antique calligraphy and painting shops.

Facing Wende Road Primary School is Wende East Road. Walk about a hundred meters. You will see a row of yellow buildings on the right. A black plaque marks it as a Guangzhou Municipal Cultural Relic Protection Unit. That’s 文德楼.

The yellow facade shows some wear. But the building’s original elegance still shines through. Back then it was high-class housing. After World War I many overseas Chinese returned. They built private residences like this. 文德楼 and the small Western-style buildings in the former Dongshan District were built around that time.

Looking up in the courtyard you can see Number 3 on the second floor. Zhou Enlai and Deng Yingchao lived there. The long narrow wooden windows are closed. Neighbors say the owner moved abroad years ago.

Number 3 is two rooms and one hall. It covers about 40 square meters. The furnishings were simple. The living room had sofas a tea table and a square dining table. Zhou Enlai and Deng Yingchao’s room had a Western-style bed and a desk. There were also suitcases and foreign books brought from France. Deng Yingchao’s mother lived in the middle room. Next to it were the kitchen and toilet.

In early 1926 the Communist Party of China’s Guangdong District Committee moved. Zhou Enlai and Deng Yingchao moved from 文德楼 to Wanfu Road. They lived here until Zhou Enlai left Guangzhou in 1927.

In March 1926 the “Zhongshan Warship Incident” occurred. Li Zhilong was arrested at 文德楼 Number 4. Thus 文德楼 is a witness to that event.

Today you can still visit 文德楼. The second floor of Building Number 3 is open to the public. It recreates the home of Zhou Enlai and Deng Yingchao. See furniture writing tools and letters. Scan QR codes to learn about revolutionary stories.

文德楼 stands as a symbol of love revolution and history. It is a place where visitors can reflect on the past and appreciate the present.
