Sun Yat-sen’s legacy lives on in Guangzhou. Here stands the Sun Yat-sen Bibliographical Centre. This library isn’t just a building. It’s a monument to a revolutionary. It commemorates Sun Yat-sen, a pivotal figure in modern Chinese history.

This location has evolved through dynasties. Once, it was the Guangfu Xuegong. This historic college spanned the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. Now, it embraces modern times with smart library services.

Overseas Chinese funded its construction. In 1927, they raised money from the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Cuba. Their donations helped build the Zhongshan Library in Guangzhou. The library honors Sun Yat-sen’s memory.

In 1934, it got even bigger. The provincial library closed. Its collection of 33,500 books went to the Municipal Zhongshan Library.

During the Japanese occupation, the library faced danger. In 1938, it closed temporarily. However, Du Dingyou, a dedicated librarian, saved about 300,000 books. He protected them from destruction.

After the war, the library was reborn. In 1945, Du Dingyou became director of the re-establishment. The library was renamed several times. In 1949, it became the Guangzhou Municipal Zhongshan Library. Later, it was renamed the Guangzhou Zhongshan Library.

In 1955, a merger changed things again. The provincial and municipal libraries combined. They formed the Sun Yat-sen Library of Guangdong Province. The original site became the North Wing. It is also known as the Sun Yat-sen Literature Museum.

Today, the Sun Yat-sen Bibliographical Centre holds history within its walls. The Chinese-style wall separates the modern from the ancient. Inside, a courtyard exudes a quaint atmosphere. A bronze statue of Dr. Sun Yat-sen stands in front of the main building. It reminds visitors of his enduring impact.

The Sun Yat-sen Bibliographical Centre is more than books. It’s a journey through time. It embodies the spirit of Sun Yat-sen and the dedication of those who preserved its legacy.
