This isn’t just any skyscraper. It’s a symbol of Guangzhou’s modern ambition. It is also called Guangzhou West Tower. The Guangzhou International Finance Center stands tall on Zhujiang Avenue West in the Tianhe District.
Construction began in December 2005. It finished in 2010. The Guangzhou International Finance Center cost GB£280 million. That is about US$365 million.
The Guangzhou International Finance Center has 103 stories above ground. It also has four below. The building reaches a height of 438.6 meters. That is 1439 feet. Its roof sits at 437.5 meters. The top floor is 415.1 meters high.
There are 71 lifts inside. The Guangzhou International Finance Center’s floor area covers 250,095 square meters.
WilkinsonEyre designed this modern marvel. Arup served as the structural engineer. The Architecture Design Institute of South China University of Technology also contributed. China State Construction and Guangzhou Municipal Construction Group JV were the main contractors.
The Guangzhou International Finance Center is more than just offices. Floors 1 to 66 house offices. Floors 67 and 68 contain mechanical equipment. The Four Seasons Hotel occupies floors 69 to 98. You’ll find the hotel lobby on the 70th floor. Floors 99 and 100 offer an observation deck.
The Guangzhou International Finance Center is part of Guangzhou’s Twin Towers. As of 2023, it is the world’s tallest building with a rooftop helipad. The helipad sits 438 meters high.
The building once held the name Guangzhou West Tower. There were plans for an even taller Guangzhou East Tower. The Guangzhou CTF Finance Center now occupies that space.
The Guangzhou International Finance Center won the RIBA 2012 Lubetkin Prize. This recognizes the best building by a British architect outside the UK.
At ground level, a podium complex awaits. It includes a luxury retail mall. There is also a conference center. High-quality serviced apartments are there.
The Guangzhou IFC Shopping Mall is from B1 to the 5th floor. There is a Lego flagship store. You can also find a Starbucks and a Costa Coffee here.
