Tianhe Stadium officially opened in August 1987. It was built for the 6th National Games of China. Imagine the excitement. The stadium rose from the former site of Guangzhou Tianhe Airport.

This multi-purpose stadium in Tianhe District holds over 58,000 people. It is primarily used for football matches. The stadium is the home of Guangzhou F.C.

Tianhe Stadium is not just a venue for local games. It has hosted major international events. The final match of the 1991 FIFA Women’s World Cup was held here. The USA defeated Norway 2-1. Can you picture the electric atmosphere that day? It attracted a sell-out crowd of 65,000.

The stadium also hosted the football finals of the 2010 Asian Games. The AFC Champions League final match was played here twice. This was in 2013 and 2015.

Guangzhou Evergrande moved into Tianhe Stadium in 2011. This followed their promotion to the Chinese Super League. In 2016, the club obtained the operating rights. They secured them from the Guangzhou Sports Bureau for twenty years.

Between 2012 and 2014, Marcello Lippi managed Guangzhou Evergrande. He led them to three consecutive League titles. They also won the AFC Champions League. Tianhe Stadium was the site where the club lifted the coveted trophy. It forever etched the stadium in the club’s history.

Getting here is easy. You can take the Guangzhou Metro Line 1. Get off at Tianhe Sports Center Station. Lines 1 or 3 will take you to Tiyu Xilu Station. Line 3 also stops at Linhexi Station. Each provides easy access to the stadium’s gates.
