The Guangzhou City God Temple also known as Chenghuang Temple holds a special place in Guangzhou’s heart. Built in 1370 during the Ming Dynasty it was once the largest Chenghuang Temple in the entire Lingnan region. Imagine the grandeur of its original structure including the Etiquette Door the Centre Door the Worshipping Pavilion and the Great Hall. Sadly much was lost in 1920 when streets were built. Only the Great Hall and the Worshipping Pavilion remain. Yet these remnants still hold immense historical and cultural significance. They are Guangzhou-level cultural relics protection units freely open to the public.

Within the main hall you’ll find a remarkable painting mural. Spanning over 240 square meters it depicts 132 gods. From Pangu and Nuwa to Guanyin the Jade Emperor and even the Sihai Dragon King. This stunning artwork is incredibly rare a treasure not to be missed. The temple is dedicated to the worship of city protecting gods. Provincial officials paid homage here raising its status above other Chenghuang Temples. During the Qing Dynasty under Emperor Yongzheng’s reign it even became the Capital Chenghuang Temple of Guangdong. Its elevated status explains its once impressive scale.
