Is Großer Werder truly an island or a peninsula? It is a question that sparks debate. Großer Werder lies southwest of Hiddensee. It is west of the island of Bock. To the east, it joins the peninsula of Zingst.

Großer Werder belongs to Vorpommern-Rügen. This district is in northeast Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. Until the first half of the 20th century, people lived on Großer Werder. Its only farmstead stood in a solitary location. This gave the island the nickname Ostsee-Hallig. A hallig is a desolate, marshy North Sea island off the Jutland coast.

Today, Großer Werder is part of the municipality of Groß Mohrdorf. It is a nature reserve. It belongs to the West Pomeranian Lagoon Area National Park. The Grabowbodden lies south of the island. To the north is the Baltic Sea.

The inlet at the eastern tip of Zingst has seen increasing siltation. Because of this, Großer Werder became a peninsula. This occurred in the 1970s and 1980s. Depending on the date and base material, it may appear as either a peninsula or an island. So, depending on when you look at the maps, Großer Werder shape may differ.

Imagine the people who once lived here. They were isolated from the mainland. They braved the harsh Baltic Sea winds. They worked the land on this unique island. Today, nature has reclaimed Großer Werder. It has become a haven for wildlife. It offers a glimpse into a past way of life. Großer Werder represents a dynamic landscape. Its identity shifts with the tides and the passage of time. This place is more than just land. It is a story etched in sand and sea.
