Established in 1876 as the Germanistic Seminar the Institut für Deutsche Philologie boasts a rich history. It wasn’t always known by its current name. The institute’s foundation predates its official naming. In 1840 the University of Greifswald established an “Extraordinariat” for German philology. This was a significant step. It marked the beginning of the dedicated study of German language and literature in Greifswald.

Wilhelm Wilmanns a prominent Germanist was the founder and first professor of the Germanistic Seminar. He laid the groundwork for the institute’s future success. He only taught in Greifswald for a short time however. He later moved to Bonn. A commemorative plaque marks his former residence near the current institute. This small detail gives a glimpse into the institute’s past.

Over the years the institute has seen many renowned professors. Gustav Ehrismann Paul Merker Wolfgang Stammler Leopold Magon Hildegard Emmel and Bruno Markwardt all contributed to its legacy. Their work shaped the field of German studies. They left an indelible mark on the institution.

The institute’s existence wasn’t without interruption. During the GDR era it was dissolved and integrated into the “Section for German Studies Art and Musicology”. In 1990 after German reunification it was re-established. This time under its current name Institut für Deutsche Philologie.

Today the Institut für Deutsche Philologie is a vibrant center for German studies. It is part of the University of Greifswald. It houses the Koeppen Archive. This archive preserves the literary legacy of Wolfgang Koeppen a significant German writer. The institute’s six departments cover a broad spectrum of Germanistic research and teaching. They range from German linguistics to the didactics of German language and literature. The Pommersches Wörterbuch a regional dictionary project receives significant attention. This contributes to the preservation of Pomeranian dialect.

The Institut für Deutsche Philologie stands as a testament to the enduring importance of German studies. It’s a place of scholarly pursuit and cultural preservation. The stories within its walls and its archives are rich with intellectual contributions. They embody the spirit of academic excellence in Greifswald. The building silently bears witness to centuries of intellectual activity. It is more than just a building. It is a living repository of German language and literary history.
