Whispers of history linger in Diedrichshagen. This unassuming village near Greifswald holds centuries of secrets. Diedrichshagen wasn’t always a quiet rural idyll.

In 1271 Diedrichshagen first appeared in documents. Duke Barnim I confirmed the monastery Eldena’s ownership of six farms here. This likely formalized a gift from Count Konrad von Gützkow. The name Diedrichshagen itself speaks volumes. Many similar village names trace back to their founders during the German eastward expansion. Diedrichshagen was a typical clearing settlement.

The village flourished under the Eldena monastery’s stewardship. They established a large agricultural estate. After the secularization of 1534 the estate became a ducal domain. Later the Dukes transferred it to Greifswald University in 1634. The university leased the farm for revenue to fund its operations. The farm was also known as a sheep farm or manor.

Diedrichshagen’s growth continued. By 1865 it had 129 inhabitants. The village boasted a school seven houses and twelve farm buildings. Records even mention a sizable flock of 1200 sheep. Imagine the scene the bleating of sheep the smell of freshly turned earth.

The period between the World Wars saw new developments. Small farms emerged supplementing the existing agricultural activity. Land reform in Diedrichshagen was limited. Large-scale farmers and Nazi confiscations played a role.

In 1887/88 a waterworks was built for Greifswald just north of Diedrichshagen. Today a street bears the name Am Wasserwerk a lasting tribute to this significant construction. A forester’s lodge was added around 1900. It still stands in the northeastern woods.

Diedrichshagen’s charm lies in its preserved history. The old school now serves as the community center. The 1930s farmhouses are remarkably well-preserved. Since 1990 numerous houses of varied architectural styles have been built around these historic structures.

The village houses the headquarters of the Boddenküste Water and Wastewater Association. They manage services for the offices of Züssow Landhagen and Lubmin. Since 2011 the NEL natural gas pipeline runs close by from Lubmin westward.

In 2019 Diedrichshagen became part of Weitenhagen. Detlef Neumann was its last mayor. Today Diedrichshagen’s history lives on. It is a reminder of the area’s rich past. The quiet village is a vibrant testament to the region’s resilience and growth.
