“For Rath and Tath to Mayor Dr Paepke thanks from his friends and fellow citizens 1866” This inscription on the Paepke-Denkmal speaks volumes. It whispers stories of a man whose vision shaped Greifswald. We stand before the Paepke-Denkmal a testament to Dr Carl Paepke Greifswald’s former mayor. His legacy is deeply intertwined with the city’s growth particularly its connection to the railway network.

Imagine Greifswald in the mid-19th century. A smaller city its potential constrained by its isolation. Then came Dr Paepke a visionary leader who championed progress. He understood the transformative power of rail. His relentless advocacy secured Greifswald’s place on the Angermünde-Stralsunder railway line. This connection spurred economic growth and transformed the city.

The Paepke-Denkmal itself has quite a history. Initially unveiled in 1867 it featured a marble bust created by Bernhard Afinger. Sadly this bust suffered vandalism and damage. It was replaced with a bronze version in 1886. However during World War II this bronze bust was melted down for war materials. Only the granite stele remained.

For many years the stele stood neglected. Yet the memory of Dr Paepke and his contributions persisted. The people of Greifswald never forgot their mayor’s work. They actively pushed to restore the monument. In 2017 a new bronze bust was created based on old drawings and photographs. It was placed atop the restored stele.

This restoration was not simple. It took years of effort. Local citizens and officials collaborated. The result is this complete monument a symbol of Greifswald’s resilience and its appreciation of its history. Today we see the culmination of a dedicated effort. Dr Paepke’s legacy continues to inspire. His farsightedness ensured Greifswald’s connection to a wider world. The Paepke-Denkmal stands as a reminder. It is a proud monument to a remarkable man. It honors his unwavering commitment to the city he served. His vision continues to shape Greifswald’s progress.
