Have you ever seen a bridge open and close like a giant wooden mouth? The Wiecker Brücke in Greifswald is just that. It’s a marvel a truly special place. This isn’t just any bridge. It’s a historical landmark connecting the charming fishing village of Wieck to Eldena. Built in 1887 by August Spruth a skilled shipbuilder and shipping magnate the Wiecker Brücke is one of the oldest functioning wooden bascule bridges still in existence.

Imagine Spruth’s vision. He commissioned the bridge to connect his community and ensure access for ships. Picture the carpenters in his shipyard carefully crafting each piece of wood. The bridge is 551 meters long 75 meters wide and boasts a waterway passage of 107 meters. Even today this impressive structure is raised and lowered by hand a testament to its enduring design. It’s truly amazing.

The Wiecker Brücke however is more than just wood and mechanics. It’s steeped in stories some charming others a little less so. There’s the tale of the fifteen geese each required to pay a pfennig to cross before 1939. This was the law. Think about it. Geese paying tolls! A charming peculiarity.

Then there were the less charming years between 1990 and 2000 when crossing cost 5 DM. It was a fee many resented. But the real drama unfolded in 2006 when the city levied a 50-cent toll. Parents transporting their children to school and kindergarten were outraged. They took their fight to court eventually winning in 2010. Today only visitors pay. The city clearly needed to maintain the bridge but not at the expense of its residents.

Walking across the Wiecker Brücke today is a unique experience. You’re not just crossing a bridge. You’re stepping through history. You’re connecting two distinct communities that share a rich maritime heritage. It is more than just a pathway; it’s a journey through time a testament to ingenuity perseverance and the power of local stories. The Wiecker Brücke is a must see landmark. Its story a reminder that even the smallest details can hold the most captivating narratives.
