Overwhelming isn’t it? The sheer scale of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.
This breathtaking structure isn’t just a mosque. It’s a testament to faith a celebration of art and a symbol of unity. Built between 1996 and 2007 it’s the largest mosque in the UAE. It can hold over 40000 worshippers. The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan commissioned it. He wanted a place to embody peace tolerance and diversity. His vision was monumental. His grave lies peacefully in the mosque’s courtyard.
Imagine the meticulous craftsmanship. More than 3000 workers and 38 contracting companies collaborated. They used 100000 tonnes of white marble. Mostly from Macedonia and Greece. It’s a sea of white. The main prayer hall is awe-inspiring. It houses the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet. Made by around 1200 to 1300 Iranian carpet knotters. It took two years to complete. It weighs 35 tons. This carpet alone is a masterpiece.
Seven magnificent chandeliers hang from the ceiling. They are made by Faustig in Germany. Millions of Swarovski crystals glisten. The largest is 49 feet high. 33 feet in diameter. It weighs 12 tons. It’s the second largest chandelier in a mosque.
Even at night the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is magical. The lighting system mimics the phases of the moon. Beautiful light projections dance across the walls. The scene is enhanced by the reflective pools. They mirror the mosque’s columns.
