Did you know that the Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Mosque is one of the largest mosques in the United Arab Emirates? Also known as Al Ain Grand Mosque, it stands as a testament to Islamic architecture. It embodies the rich cultural heritage of the region.

Let’s step back in time to understand its origins. The construction of the Sheikh Khalifa Mosque began in December 2013. It was an ambitious project awarded to the Arabian Construction Company for AED 600 million. Originally, the completion was set for 2016. It finally opened its doors to the public on April 12, 2021.

The Sheikh Khalifa Mosque is named in honor of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. He was the Ruler of Abu Dhabi and President of the United Arab Emirates. He served from November 2004 until his death in May 2022.

Before the Sheikh Khalifa Mosque, the biggest mosque in Al Ain was that of Shaikhah Salamah. She was the mother of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. He was the father of Sheikh Khalifa.

Interestingly, during the construction phase in September 2018, a remarkable discovery was made nearby. The remains of a 1,000-year-old mosque were unearthed. It dates back to the Islamic Golden Age. This find underscores the area’s deep historical roots.

The Sheikh Khalifa Mosque has four minarets. Each minaret soars to a height of 60 meters. These minarets draw inspiration from the Great Mosque of Samarra. An arcade connects the various parts of the mosque. It rims the yard. The arcade spans an area of 7,660 square meters. The architectural style reflects Andalusian and Umayyad influences.

The most prominent feature of the Sheikh Khalifa Mosque is its huge dome. It is the largest of its kind in the country. The dome covers the main prayer hall. Verses from the Quran adorn the dome. The interior height of the dome is 31.3 meters. The interior diameter is 75 meters. The exterior diameter reaches 86 meters. The total area of the dome is 4,117 square meters.

Sheikh Tahnoun bin Mohammed Al Nahyan offered prayers here on May 13, 2021. He is the Ruler’s Representative in Al Ain Region. The opening of the Sheikh Khalifa Mosque marked a significant moment for the community.
