In the twisting alleys of Chinatown, a street bends so sharply it earned a chilling nickname: the Bloody Angle. Doyers Street, a mere 200 feet long, holds a history as convoluted as its own path. This seemingly unassuming street was once the epicenter of New York City’s Tong Wars. The year 1905 marked a turning point. The peace of Doyers Street shattered when gunfire erupted in the Chinese Theater. Three lives were lost that night, marking the beginning of an era of unprecedented violence. The Hip Sing Tong and On Leong Tong, rival gangs vying for control of Chinatown’s underworld, turned this tight corner into their battleground. The Bloody Angle’s sharp bend provided the perfect cover for ambushes. Hatchets and bullets became commonplace. The street ran red with blood, solidifying its grim moniker. Doyers Street became synonymous with fear and violence. Even today, some believe the echoes of these brutal clashes linger. Beyond the bloodshed, Doyers Street holds other stories. It was here, amidst the turmoil, that a young singing waiter named Izzy Baline worked. He would later become Irving Berlin, the composer of iconic American songs like “God Bless America.” Doyers Street, the Bloody Angle, a place where history’s shadows intertwine with the vibrant tapestry of Chinatown.
