Established in 1899 Gyeongin High School didn’t actually open its doors until November 10 1900. Its original name was Gwallib Middle School. This was part of a wider program of educational modernization. This modernization was interrupted by the Japanese annexation in 1910. The school however survived. It became a high school in 1906. It continued offering middle school classes until 1971. Gyeongin High School educated many South Korean leaders. It is part of the K-S mark. This informal reference to educational credentials suggests career success. The S stands for Seoul National University. Before 1974 when high school entrance exams were abolished Gyeongin High School was the highest ranked school in the country. Alumni associations are widespread throughout Korea and abroad.
