Journey back to 1892. Seven souls, hailing from Flavannah County, Virginia, embarked on a new chapter in the Bronx, New York. They established the Thessalonia Baptist Church. This small group of ten faithful individuals laid the foundation for what would become a cornerstone of faith and community. The Thessalonia Christian Church, originally Thessalonia Baptist Church, began its journey with Reverend T. Wyatt leading the flock. Among those early members were Brother Ashland W. White, a pillar of the church, serving as Chairman of the Deacon Board, Sunday School Superintendent, Trustee, and church clerk, and Sister Jean White, recognized as the first mother of the church. The church’s location changed several times in those early years. The congregation worshipped at various locations in the Bronx, eventually settling at 921 Eagle Avenue in 1919 under the leadership of Reverend L. J. Johns. A new chapter unfolded in 1934 when the congregation moved into a newly constructed building on East 158th Street. Hardship struck just five years later, leaving the church without a pastor and a place of worship. Through the kindness of Epworth M. E. Church and its pastor, Reverend George Taylor, Thessalonia Baptist Church found a temporary home. Their prayers were answered in June 1939 when they returned to 921 Eagle Avenue. Later that year, Minister James A. Polite, with the support of Reverend B. Bonaparte Sr., became the pastor. Under his guidance, Thessalonia Baptist Church moved to its present location in 1942. Pastor Polite’s dedicated service of 41 years left an indelible mark on both the church and the community. This legacy is immortalized in the renaming of Stebbins Avenue to Reverend James A. Polite Avenue, a testament to his impact. A new era began in 1982 with the arrival of Reverend Dr. Shellie Sampson, Jr. Under his vision, the church expanded both spiritually and physically, culminating in the construction of the multi-million dollar Community Cultural Center. Today, the Thessalonia Christian Church stands as a beacon of hope. Its rich history is a story of faith, resilience, and community. It’s a reminder of the power of small beginnings and the enduring legacy of those who dared to dream.
