Gazing upon Maia, one can’t help but feel a connection to Portugal’s rich history. Maia is a municipality located in the Porto Metropolitan Area. The area has been inhabited since the Paleolithic era, showcasing a long and fascinating past. Maia’s history intertwines with the very founding of the Portuguese nation. Some historians believe that Prince Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal, was educated here alongside the Mendes da Maia family. This family included prominent figures like Archbishop of Braga D. Paio Mendes and the warrior Gonçalo Mendes da Maia, known as “the Lidador”. He is now considered a hero of Maia. Maia also played a crucial role during the Age of Discovery. The region produced sails and fabrics for the Portuguese caravels that explored the world. In the early 16th century, King Manuel I granted Maia its charter. This charter outlined the rent, legal proceedings, and punishments within the municipality. Maia experienced significant changes in the 1800s. Administrative reforms in 1836 established Maia as a separate municipality. However, it was briefly abolished in 1857, only to be restored just a few years later in 1868. Today, Maia is a thriving municipality divided into ten civil parishes. The population is around 135,300. It’s a place where echoes of ancient warriors mingle with the modern energy of a growing city. Maia offers a glimpse into Portugal’s captivating past and its promising future.
