“They never fired a shot in anger” a weathered inscription on the concrete wall whispers. This is Battery Catlin a relic of coastal defense. Part of Fort Wadsworth it stands silent yet speaks volumes of history. Built between 1902 and 1904 it replaced a Civil War era battery. The North Cliff Battery boasted 23 massive 15-inch Rodman guns the largest cannons of their time. Battery Catlin though smaller held only six 3-inch rapid-fire guns. These smaller guns were designed to achieve the same objective.

Despite its completion in 1904 the guns remained unmounted until 1913. Even then they only saw action during practice drills. When World War II erupted four guns were transferred to Fort Hamilton. Two others found a new home at Fort Tilden. Battery Catlin fell silent in 1942. Its purpose fulfilled its guns relocated its story etched into the concrete.

Today you can explore Battery Catlin’s exterior. You can even walk on its roof but beware. Wear long pants. Poison ivy briars and ticks lurk in the weeds that have reclaimed much of the site. The three identical units each housing two guns stand as silent sentinels. Inside ammunition once stored now only echoes with the passage of time.

Some steel doors lie torn open by curious visitors. The empty rooms inside offer few clues to the battery’s past. Just beyond Battery Catlin on Battery Weed Road a small structure sits unassuming. It may appear like a pillbox. But it’s actually a Coincidence Rangefinder station. This device once helped soldiers pinpoint enemy targets.

Battery Catlin’s story is one of preparation and ultimately silence. It’s a testament to technological advancements and the ever-changing nature of warfare. It’s a reminder that even the mightiest of fortresses can be rendered obsolete. It’s a hidden gem within Gateway National Recreation Area a poignant reminder of America’s military past. Take a moment to appreciate its quiet strength. Let the echoes of history reverberate within you. Let the concrete itself recount the tales of a forgotten era.
