Nestled in the heart of Mumbai, the Our Lady Of Health Church, Cavel, whispers tales of resilience and devotion. This church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to the enduring spirit of a community. The Our Lady Of Health Church first opened its doors in 1794 as a humble chapel under Portuguese rule. Imagine the scene. The air thick with the scent of incense. The murmur of prayers echoing through the simple wooden structure. This original chapel, unfortunately, succumbed to the ravages of time. But from its foundations rose a new church in 1812, a phoenix from the ashes. The Our Lady Of Health Church underwent a significant transformation in 1971, solidifying its presence in the cityscape. A striking feature of the Our Lady Of Health Church is the exquisite grotto. It stands gracefully in front of the church. It houses a beautiful statue of the Our Lady of Immaculate Conception. Inside, a breathtaking main altar commands attention. This historical monument, carved from rich rosewood and delicately inlaid with gold, is believed to be of Portuguese origin. Legend has it that this altar was transported from the Dominican Convent in Goa in 1857. It made the journey by sea, a testament to its importance. Within the altar’s niche rests a statue of Mother Mary, cradling the infant Jesus. The altar also houses the tabernacle, where the Holy Eucharist is present day and night, a continuous tradition for nearly two centuries. The Our Lady Of Health Church has also played a significant role in social service. It was home to the first Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Mumbai. Established in 1862 at the Our Lady of Hope Church in Bhuleshwar, this conference later found its home at Our Lady Of Health Church after the closure of the Bhuleshwar church in 1942. Our Lady Of Health Church continues to serve as a beacon of faith and community in the bustling metropolis of Mumbai.
