Rehwiese. What does it mean? The name Rehwiese translates to “Deer Meadow”.

Welcome to the Rehwiese. This narrow lowland stretches almost a kilometer through Berlin’s Nikolassee district. Once known as Kuhfenn or Franzosenwiese, the Rehwiese has a rich history.

In 1901, before the Nikolassee colony was established, deer grazed here. The valley-shaped Rehwiese provided a perfect habitat. It connects Nikolassee lake to Schlachtensee lake. This area was once a swampy depression. Today, it’s largely drained.

The Rehwiese shows the characteristics of the Grunewald lake chain. This chain formed from an ice-age primal river valley. Villas from the turn of the 20th century line the slopes on both sides.

Marshy patches still exist near Nikolassee lake. The swampy environment provides needed wet soil. Valuable floodplain forests thrive here.

The Rehwiese and Nikolassee have been designated a protected area since August 25, 1960. The landscape protection area covers 25.6 hectares. This protects the natural environment.

The ordinance excludes the facilities of the Berliner Wasserbetriebe. These facilities extract, convey and enrich groundwater. Twelve wells in the Rehwiese extract three million cubic meters of water annually. From 1983 to 1992, it was around nine million cubic meters per year. Rewetted areas should be preserved. Shrub encroachment should be pushed back.

Berliners cherish green spaces. Around 33% of Berlin is forests, parks, and gardens. Berliners love nature. The city has around 2,500 public parks and garden spaces.

The Rehwiese is a place to enjoy nature. You can walk and relax in this protected area. Take a moment to appreciate Berlin’s commitment to preserving green spaces. Enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the Rehwiese.
