Seven decades ago Queen Elisabeth Hospital stood here. It wasn’t always a hospital though. This land a former insane asylum. The Herzberge complex a chilling tale. Imagine the lives lived within these walls. Patients some deemed unworthy.

The history of Herzberge stretches back to 1893. A city-run lunatic asylum then. It replaced an older facility in Dalldorf. Hermann Blankenstein designed the impressive buildings. Neorenaissance style yellow and red bricks. Critics called it barracks architecture. But it served its purpose. A place for the mentally ill. A place of confinement.

The institution’s name changed in 1925. It became the Herzberge Municipal Treatment and Care Facility. The 1930s brought a sinister shift. Racial hygiene policies took hold. Jewish doctors lost their jobs. Forced sterilizations followed. The horrors of the Nazi regime reached these grounds.

During World War II things worsened. Patients were transferred or worse. The Aktion T4 program targeted the mentally ill. Many Herzberge patients were murdered. The facility became a general hospital. It housed war wounded and those with infectious diseases. The original purpose was lost to the atrocities.

After the war Queen Elisabeth Hospital emerged. It combined with another facility. The legacy of the past remained. The grounds bear witness to pain and suffering. The buildings though stand. They are a reminder of a dark chapter. A part of Berlin’s painful history. Yet the site is now a place of healing. It is also home to a tranquil landscape park. This is a significant place.

Today you see the Evangelisches Krankenhaus Königin Elisabeth Herzberge. Modern healthcare prevails. Yet beneath lie the stories of the past. They speak of suffering. Of resilience. Of the dark side of medicine. This site embodies the complexities of history. A hospital offering care amidst a haunting past.

A chapel remains. It houses an historic organ. It once resided in a village church. The instrument found its new home. The old chapel hosts concerts today.

The old boiler house functions as a museum. It displays generations of steam boilers. It also serves as a cultural venue. The library occupies a wing. It’s a quiet haven.

The landscape park is an oasis of calm. It offers respite. It’s a place of reflection. A stark contrast to the hospital’s heavy history. Memorials also stand on the grounds. They honor the victims of the war. They honor the diaconal sisters. They remind us of the past.

So here we stand at Herzberge. A place where pain and healing intertwine. Remember this place and its multifaceted history.
