Picture this: A cornerstone. Not just any cornerstone but the foundation of St Petrus Canisius in Dortmund. Laid in 1925 it marked the beginning of something new. This wasn’t just a church it was a community in the making.

St Petrus Canisius isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to faith perseverance and community spirit. Located in Husen a district of Dortmund it’s a relatively young church compared to others in the city. Its construction began only in 1925. A community effort the people of Husen and neighboring Kurl worked together to build their beloved St Petrus Canisius.

The church officially opened in September 1927. Almost immediately various groups formed. These included Kolping society women’s groups choirs and scouts. They created a vibrant and active community life that continues to this day. In 1961 a kindergarten opened next door. It’s still thriving today.

The early years of St Petrus Canisius were shaped by the people who built it and those who gathered within its walls. The community’s growth is mirrored in the church’s story. Around the turn of the millennium new buildings went up and many families moved into Husen. These families brought children who found their place within the church. They joined youth groups choirs dance troupes and served as altar servers. The church grew with its community becoming a cornerstone of Husen itself.

The stained glass windows of St Petrus Canisius tell more stories. Emil Peters created many of the original windows around 1962. These depict symbols of faith like the bread and fish. Later Thomas Jessen added a window dedicated to Adolph Kolping. These windows are a visual testament to the church’s enduring spiritual message.

St Petrus Canisius is a lively place of worship. Generations have passed through its doors. The church stands as a symbol of the resilient spirit of Husen. The unwavering commitment to faith community and the values of Christianity shape the life of this Dortmund neighborhood. It stands as a vibrant center of faith and community showing its dedication to its people and its legacy. A legacy built on faith hope and the strong bonds of its people.
