Gazing at the seemingly insignificant Dongding Islet, who would guess its dramatic history? Dongding Islet. A seemingly unremarkable speck in the vast Taiwan Strait. Yet, this small island, just 0.0160 square kilometers, holds a story of military tension, strategic importance, and human resilience. Dongding Islet, also known as Chapel Island, marks the southernmost point of Kinmen County and lies close to mainland China. Its location, a mere 13 kilometers from the mainland coast, placed it directly in the crosshairs of conflict during the Second Taiwan Strait Crisis in 1958.

The island, bare rock surrounded by steep cliffs, became a strategic outpost for Nationalist forces. Imagine the scene: fifty men, commanded by Captain Chang Yi Ming, stationed on this barren rock, their existence punctuated by the constant threat of communist attack. They lived among machine gun nests and rifle pits, their only comforts a basketball court and spartan buildings erected amidst the grassy summit. The lighthouse, built in 1871 by A. M. Bisbee from a design by David Marr Henderson, became more than a beacon for ships. It was a symbol of Nationalist presence, its light kept dark to confuse enemy vessels.

During the Second Taiwan Strait Crisis, Dongding Islet became a flashpoint. On August 24th and 25th, 1958, communist forces attempted to land on the island. Naval battles raged in the surrounding waters. The Nationalists, outnumbered but resolute, repelled the attacks, their grenades raining down on the enemy from the cliffs above. Dongding Islet held. This tiny island, devoid of trees and natural defenses, became a testament to human tenacity. The lighthouse, silent and dark, stood sentinel.

Even after the crisis, Dongding Islet remained a point of contention, its name appearing in official declarations regarding China’s territorial waters. The lighthouse, damaged by mainland artillery fire, was repaired in 1964. It continued to guide ships, a steadfast presence in the turbulent waters. For five decades, the island remained off-limits to civilians, a stark reminder of the ongoing political struggle. Then, in 2005, control of Dongding Islet shifted from the military to the Kinmen County government. A new chapter began for this small island, a chapter of peace and accessibility. Yet, the echoes of its tumultuous past still linger, whispering tales of conflict and resilience in the salty air.
