“Sapphire’s Corner” evokes a sense of peace. It suggests a haven in the heart of Brooklyn. This is Van Dyke Playground. It is more than just swings and slides. Van Dyke Playground carries a rich history. It is a testament to community resilience.

The playground’s name pays homage to the Van Dyke family. They were early Dutch settlers of 17th-century Brooklyn. Generations of Van Dycks held significant influence. They served as magistrates, judges, and landowners. Their legacy helped shape the towns of Brooklyn.

More recently, Van Dyke Playground got a significant upgrade. The community celebrated the groundbreaking of a new playground and recreation area on September 20. Lisa Kenner, Resident Association President, led the charge. City Councilmember Darlene Mealy and NYCHA representatives joined in. Together, they broke ground for the new construction project. This project promised hope for the 3400 residents of Van Dyke Houses.

The communal space was dedicated as “Sapphire’s Corner”. Resident leaders envisioned it as a place for inner peace. They hoped it would bring hope to children and families. The play area includes colorful play structures. A flower-shaped spray shower adds to the fun. Safety surfacing ensures children can play without harm.

An exercise track surrounds the playground. It encourages caregivers to walk, run, and play with their kids. Residents provided input on the track’s design. The goal was to create a space for active engagement.

Sapphire’s Corner is part of a larger grounds improvement plan. The Van Dyke Houses campus will also see renovations to seating and picnic areas. These improvements aim to create a more inviting environment for everyone.

Van Dyke III, an affordable housing project, has been constructed nearby. It includes 179 affordable apartments for low-income households. It also features a daycare facility. A community health clinic and wellness center will be part of the project. These resources will benefit both NYCHA residents and the broader community.

The Van Dyke III project also brought improvements to the Van Dyke campus. A basketball court got a makeover with artwork by Sophia Dawson. Residents and community members helped paint it. It is a testament to collaborative spirit.

The development partner, Trinity Financial, exceeded expectations. They prioritized Minority and Women-owned Business Enterprises. They also focused on hiring local residents. This created economic opportunities for the community.

Van Dyke Playground stands as a symbol of community. It represents progress and a commitment to a brighter future. As children laugh and play here, remember the history. Remember the efforts to create this space. Van Dyke Playground is a place where memories are made. It is a space where community thrives.
