“Lost in thought, Monk Wonhyo?” a voice echoed through the serene mountain air. We stand before Cheongnyangsa Temple, nestled within the embrace of Cheongnyangsan Mountain Provincial Park. Cheongnyangsa Temple isn’t just a temple. It’s a whisper from the 7th century, a tangible link to the Silla Kingdom. Built in 663 by the renowned Monk Wonhyo, this sacred site holds a special significance. Notice how the twelve mountain peaks encircle the temple. According to feng shui principles, they resemble the petals of a lotus flower, creating a naturally auspicious location. Cheongnyangsa Temple safeguards two remarkable historical treasures. The first is the board of Yuribojeon, inscribed by King Gongmin of Goryeo. The second is the Jibul, a gold-painted paper Buddha statue. These artifacts offer a glimpse into the rich history that has unfolded within these walls. Behind Cheongnyangsa Temple, Bosalbong Peak beckons. A short hike along the trail leads to Eungjinjeon, a hermitage once inhabited by Monk Wonhyo himself. From there, you can gaze upon Geumtapbong Peak, its cliffs rising majestically. It earned its name, meaning “golden pagoda”, from its resemblance to a nine-story pagoda, adorned with pine trees at its base.
