Hidden amongst the rolling hills of Barcelos lies a village steeped in history. The village of Monte de Fralães may seem unassuming at first glance. But don’t let that fool you. It holds within its heart tales of conquerors, noble families, and a legacy woven into the very fabric of Portugal. Monte de Fralães wasn’t always its name. It was once known as S. Cristóvão de Silveiros, mentioned as early as the 11th century. The name evolved, echoing the rise of a powerful family, the Correias. This family’s presence is still felt today. Their ancestral home, the Solar de Fralães, once housed the municipality of Fralães, a testament to their influence. The village church you see before you, with its unassuming charm, was once their chapel. Inside, you’ll find a remarkable 18th-century altarpiece, a shining example of traditional Portuguese “talha” or gilt woodwork. Imagine the grandeur of those times, the echoes of prayers whispered in this sacred space. It’s a reminder that Monte de Fralães, though small, has always been a place of faith and community. The village even boasts a famous son: the pianist and composer Luís Costa, who first drew breath in this very place. Though merged into a larger parish in 2013, the spirit of Monte de Fralães remains. It’s a place where history isn’t just read in books. It’s felt in the stones beneath your feet and whispered on the wind that sweeps across the hills.
