Ever heard of a radio station born in a high school? That’s WHPR-FM for you. Right here on the corner of Victor and Brush Streets in Highland Park this remarkable station has a history as rich as Detroit itself.

WHPR-FM first aired on May 21 1954. It wasn’t just any station. It was run by Highland Park High School students. They broadcast educational programs for their community. Imagine teenagers mastering the airwaves. That’s the spirit of early WHPR-FM.

In 1977 the high school moved. Wayne County Community College took over the station. They ran it until 1994. Then R J Watkins a local broadcaster bought WHPR-FM. He transformed it into a voice for Highland Park’s African-American community. The station found a new home. It moved to its current location. Watkins’ vision made WHPR-FM a vibrant community hub.

WHPR-FM’s journey hasn’t been without bumps. The FCC admonished it in 2001 for advertising violations. In 2011 it faced a $22000 fine for various infractions. These included unauthorized transmitter relocation. They also failed to maintain public files and lacked proper EAS equipment. These challenges highlight the struggles of independent broadcasting. Yet WHPR-FM persevered.

Today WHPR-FM continues to broadcast urban oldies and talk. It remains a vital part of Highland Park. It serves a community that has shaped Detroit’s rich cultural tapestry. It’s more than just a radio station. It’s a testament to resilience community spirit and the enduring power of local broadcasting. WHPR-FM a true Detroit treasure. A station that echoes the city’s rhythm and soul. A station that continues to connect its community.
