Did you know that the Highlands Lutheran Church once stood at 3995 N Irving Street? For a century it served the Berkeley neighborhood a vibrant hub of faith and community. This wasn’t just any church. It was a 14000 square foot building a testament to the congregation’s dedication. Its history is interwoven with the changing fabric of Berkeley itself. Pastor Samm Melton-Hill recalls how the church mirrored the neighborhood’s transformation over the years. It served a large immigrant population. Its identity shifted alongside the changing demographics. The building itself however held a more constant story. Built in 1957 an expansion followed five years later. The land? Acquired a century ago from the Catholic Church. This impressive structure stands as a legacy. A legacy of faith community and resilience. The Highlands Lutheran Church is a significant landmark. But times changed and the church congregation made a difficult decision. Maintaining the building presented financial challenges. The congregation prioritized their ministry choosing to relocate to a new space at 7375 Samuel Drive. They’re now renting facilities from the Rocky Mountain Synod. This move marked a new chapter. It signified a renewed focus on serving their community. The old building at Irving Street however remains a part of Denver’s history. It’s currently listed for sale at $1.75 million. The congregation hopes a community-oriented organization will purchase it. Their preference? Another church. They want to ensure the building continues to serve a vital role within the community. The Highlands Lutheran Church’s legacy lives on. Not just in bricks and mortar but in the hearts of its members and in the memories it holds for the people of Berkeley. It’s a reminder that while buildings may change communities endure. Their faith and their dedication continues to shape Denver and beyond.
