Perhaps you have never considered the stories a cemetery can tell. Friedhof Tonndorf offers many. It is a green oasis in the middle of Wandsbek. Let us explore it together.

Friedhof Tonndorf was established in 1880. It has been expanded three times. Today, it is the largest of Wandsbek’s cemeteries. It covers about 10 hectares. The Evangelisch-Lutherische Kirchengemeinde Tonndorf maintains the Friedhof Tonndorf. They consciously operate it as a place for encounters and exchanges.

The cemetery is known for its old trees. It has a park-like character. In cooperation with NABU, various measures have been developed. These measures provide ideal niches for plants, insects and birds. Nature becomes tangible for all visitors.

The sunny Himmelsgarten is a good example. It shows the desire to let originality take effect. The community graves around the obelisk are special. The farewell location outside under a red sail offers peace.

The Friedhof Tonndorf has a symmetrical layout. The main path starts as a central axis on Ahrensburger Stra\u00dfe. It ends directly at the Wandse. It passes the cemetery administration. It also passes the small chapel that was built in 1914. The path leads to the listed Kock Mausoleum. It goes to the striking bell tower. It ends at the oldest grave dating back to 1880.

You can reach the Friedhof Tonndorf easily by bus or car. Take the B75. It is a short walk from the Tonndorf train station.

The cemetery’s administration is at Ahrensburger Stra\u00dfe 188. The phone number is 040 – 67 58 56-0. It is open Monday to Friday from 9 AM to 12 PM. On Tuesdays, it is also open from 1 PM to 4 PM. On Thursdays, it is open from 1 PM to 3 PM. The Friedhof Tonndorf itself is open daily from 8 AM to 8 PM.

The Friedhof Tonndorf also has a war memorial.

Note that there are no prominent graves at Friedhof Tonndorf. However, many famous graves and monuments can be found at Friedhof Ohlsdorf.

As we conclude our tour, remember Friedhof Tonndorf. It is more than just a burial ground. It is a place of history, nature and community. It is a space for reflection and remembrance in our busy world.
