Beneath the gaze of Mount Woodson lies Lake Poway, a shimmering jewel in the heart of Poway, California. What if I told you this oasis wasn’t always here? It sprung from the foresight of a community facing a potential water crisis. Lake Poway, completed in 1972, wasn’t just a recreational afterthought. It was a solution to a serious problem. Back in the 1960s, Poway realized its water supply was vulnerable. An earthquake or aqueduct failure could leave the town high and dry, cut off from the Colorado River. Twice, voters rejected a bond to fund a dam. But in 1969, realizing the urgency, 87% voted in favor of the $3.2 million project. The dam, a 165-foot earthen giant, created Lake Poway, a reservoir with a capacity of 3,800 acre-feet. This foresight saved Poway during the torrential rains of 2017. The lake swelled, but the dam held, protecting the town. Lake Poway isn’t just a reservoir; it’s a vibrant hub of activity. Imagine casting a line into the water, hoping for a record-breaking catch. Maybe a 47-pound blue catfish, like the one caught in 2017? Or perhaps a 9-pound, 5-ounce bass, the current record holder from 2020. Trout, sunfish, and bluegill also call these waters home. Beyond fishing, the 2.75-mile loop trail beckons hikers. It winds around the lake, offering stunning views and connections to longer trails, leading even to the famous Potato Chip Rock. The landscape shifts as you walk, transitioning from sage scrub to chaparral, oak woodland, and finally, riparian woodland. Native plants, like Arroyo Lupine and Wild Canterbury bells, add splashes of color to the scenery. Lake Poway is a testament to community vision and a delightful escape into nature.
