How often have you wondered what the past looked like? You are standing before the Igreja Velha de Lagares, a church with a fascinating history, its secrets whispered from the ancient stones that form its very core. This church, though looking more modern with its white walls and slightly curved edges, served as the oldest testament to the faith in Lagares, a testament to the beliefs that were held dear by people long before our time.
This ancient church, once much smaller and simpler, already existed in the 10th or 11th centuries. But time, as time does, took its course. Around the 18th and 19th centuries the church was remodeled completely, resulting in the building you see today. The Igreja Velha de Lagares, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, emerged from the past, reborn in its new grandeur. And in its foundation they even found a Roman altar, a relic of an era even older, that they adapted to the new church.
The architect of this church is a story in itself. Fernando Coelho and Ana Loureiro, both from FCC Arquitectura, were inspired by the church’s challenging location. The church sits upon a platform built on a steep incline, which, due to its location, makes this church nearly float over the surrounding terrain. This special location provided the inspiration for the architects to create curved walls, giving the church a dramatic effect, as if it is embracing you upon arrival. And the curves aren’t just on the outside. The inside of the church is a symphony of lines that lead the viewer ever closer to its heart, a symbolic journey that mirrors a believer’s spiritual path of self-discovery.
On these walls, where the past whispers its secrets, you witness the evolution of faith through time, from the simplicity of ancient altars to the powerful symbolism that resonates within contemporary architecture. As you stand here, the Igreja Velha de Lagares invites you not just to contemplate its history but to imagine the stories that unfolded within its walls, stories of faith and belief that echo through time, as relevant today as they were long ago.
