“Lights, camera, action” could easily be the motto of the Hansa Theater. This theater in Dortmund-Hörde has a story as vibrant as its performances.

The Hansa Theater wasn’t always here. Originally, the Hansa Theater ensemble performed at Theater Hansastraße in Dortmund’s city center. This former Ufa cinema became their stage in the mid-1990s. The Hansa Theater created a unique space with red cinema seating for about 400 people. Rudi Strothmüller and Jost Krüger led the ensemble. They focused on music revues, though other artists also graced the stage. Sadly, the theater closed and was transformed into the domicil-Jazzclub.

But the Hansa Theater ensemble wasn’t ready to be silenced. They continued with guest performances. Then, in 2005, they began planning a new home. This led them to Hörde, to the Eckardtstraße. The Werk- und Begegnungszentrum became the Hansa Theater Hörde. The opening was planned for late 2006, but it was delayed. Finally, on March 10, 2007, the Hansa Theater Hörde opened its doors.

Like its predecessor, the Hansa Theater focuses on musical revues and guest performances. You might see a Johnny Cash Revue or a Janis Joplin Show. Perhaps you would enjoy Udo Jürgens Merci or the Joe Cocker Story. Musical shows such as Grenzenlos are also performed here. Many talented artists have visited the Hansa Theater.

However, disaster struck in May 2018. A fire started in the Hansa Theater’s kitchen. It destroyed much of the main auditorium. Performances at the popular venue were no longer possible. The Strothmüller family found a temporary space in Dortmund-Hombruch. Meanwhile, SHA Architekten began reconstructing the Hansa Theater on Eckardtstraße. The reconstruction was a collaborative effort. Interior designer Ulrike Pappert developed the interior design. Ubbo de Boer, chairman of the Werk- und Begegnungszentrum Hörde e.V., also contributed. The city was also involved in the coordination.

After all the construction, the new season started in the fall of 2019 at the familiar location. The Hansa Theater offers a lot of atmosphere. It is known for its in-house productions and guest appearances.

If you’re looking for a place to celebrate, consider the Musikwerkstatt next to the Hansa Theater Hörde. This event location has charm and a unique atmosphere. It’s perfect for cozy celebrations. The Musikwerkstatt has its own bar and stage. Integrated sound and lighting technology are available. There is also a covered outdoor lounge and a garden. They offer various options for special occasions. You can arrange banquets, bistro setups, or standing tables. It can accommodate up to 100 people. For larger parties, you can even rent the Hansa Theater itself. So whether it’s a show or a celebration, the Hansa Theater is ready.
