Can you imagine a church born under a brush arbor? That’s the humble origin of the Church of the Living God here in Los Angeles. The story begins in Wrightsville, Arkansas, in April 1889. Reverend William Christian, a former Baptist minister, felt a calling to preach the gospel as laid out in the Bible. He began his ministry under that simple brush arbor, and the Church of the Living God was born. The first members included Elder K. C. Adams, Reverend Josh Adams, Reverend Russell Stowe, Wm. Pierce, and Tim Jones. The church was officially incorporated in Arkansas thanks to Mr. Shackelford, a lawyer from Little Rock. By 1926, the Church of the Living God’s message had spread across the country, reaching Los Angeles. A group of believers here petitioned the National Committee to establish a temple in the city. The Church of the Living God in Los Angeles was officially established. It has been a beacon of faith ever since, continuing to grow and serve the community. The church holds firm to its core beliefs, rooted in the Bible. They believe in one God, existing as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ is recognized as the Redeemer, and the Bible is revered as the guide to eternal life. The Church of the Living God also practices three sacraments: Baptism, the Lord’s Supper, and the Washing of Feet. This last sacrament is particularly unique. It’s a symbolic act of humility and service, performed when new members join the church. The Church of the Living God in Los Angeles is more than just a building. It’s a testament to the power of faith and the enduring legacy of Reverend William Christian’s vision. It’s a place where the spirit of that humble brush arbor in Arkansas lives on, reminding us that even the smallest beginnings can blossom into something extraordinary.
