Can a memorial also be a place of quiet reflection? Here at the Fritz Göhrs Stele, nestled on the southern bank of Krumme Lanke, we find a poignant reminder of a life lost in the line of duty. The Fritz Göhrs Stele commemorates Polizei-Wachtmeister Fritz Göhrs, a mounted officer from the Grunewald depot. On July 20, 1928, tragedy struck. Göhrs’ horse bolted, throwing him into the tranquil waters of Krumme Lanke. The horse then fell on top of him, tragically trapping him beneath the surface. He drowned in the very lake he likely patrolled many times. The Fritz Göhrs Stele stands as a solemn testament to his service and sacrifice. It’s a reminder that even in seemingly peaceful surroundings, unforeseen events can unfold. The stele’s inscription reads: “Hier starb im Dienst am 20.7.1928 Polizei-Wachtmeister Fritz Göhrs Berittenes Depot Grunewald”, which translates to “Here died in service on 20.7.1928 Police Sergeant Fritz Göhrs Mounted Depot Grunewald”. The location of the stele, near the northeastern end of the lake’s southern shore, offers a quiet place for contemplation. Imagine the ripple of the water, the rustling of leaves, the calls of birds. These sounds now accompany the silent story of Fritz Göhrs, forever etched in stone at the Fritz Göhrs Stele.
